A Special Toast!

In October, AVA hosted a special event with friends and supporters toasting the organization’s 40-year impact.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens delivers remarks at AVA’s 40th celebration.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens joined AVA to commemorate this milestone anniversary.

“I am honored to help celebrate an organization that has been a lifeline for more than 150,000 Atlantans and their families,” said Mayor Dickens. “The truth is, I wish that number were zero; that we didn’t have any victims, but AVA will always be needed when tragic incidents occur in the  aftermath of a crime. I’m grateful that the residents in this city can turn to AVA for help and healing in their time of need.”

Atlanta City Council President Doug Shipman was also there to deliver a proclamation to recognize AVA’s important work over the last four decades.

And, AVA’s Executive Director Shontel Brunson-Wright was joined by AVA’s previous executive directors, Aurelia Sands Belle—who opened the doors of AVA in 1984—and Brenda Muhammad—who served as executive director for 25 years.

“I think it speaks volumes for the importance of this work, and of the dedicated leaders who came before me—that in our 40-year history, I’m only the third executive director,” Shontel said.

AVA’s Chair of the Board of Directors, Ronda Graham, thanked guests and recognized their critical role in enabling the mission of AVA.

“We couldn’t do this work without those of you in this room—our friends, team members, volunteers, donors, and partners,” Ronda said. “You make our work possible, and this toast is a celebration of your support which enables our mission—thank you!”
